The law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and death. —Romans 8:2
We know from God’s Word that our fight against sin won’t be completely won until we’re home with the Lord. What He wants us to learn is that this gospel that saved us can also keep saving us, delivering us moment by moment. The battle on earth keeps us turning to Christ—His cross, His power, and His grace.
It’s His love for us, then, that leads us down this long, hard road, putting to death our unwholesome substitutes one obedient choice at a time. He enlists us in the battle so we can learn to fight His way.
As we persevere, we begin to experience a richer, more enduring victory over our habits and addictions than any divine snap of the fingers could provide.
That’s because our goal isn’t merely to get better. The goal is to draw near to God, who is more desirable and fulfilling than any excess of food or drink, any forbidden relationship, any pleasurable, exciting, yet enslaving enticement. Than anything.
