His mother treasured up all these things in her heart. —Luke 2:51 ESV
Two times when describing Mary, we are told that Mary “treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart” (Luke 2:19, 51 ESV). The original word translated treasured means “to keep carefully; to preserve, keep safe, keep close.” Amid the many responsibilities of being a wife and a mother, Mary took time to contemplate what was happening in her life and to meditate on what God had done.
The hurried, hectic, harried pace of our culture can be addictive and intoxicating. Many of us fill every waking moment with noise and activity. Social media, email, cell phones, music, and mass media threaten to occupy every bit of available space and to leave us emotionally and spiritually empty and shallow. If we are going to be instruments of His grace who reflect His light into the darkness around us, we must take time to be quiet—to be still—to ponder and reflect on who God is and what He is doing around us and in us.
