Torn

August 23, 2025 Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth

Jesus let out a loud cry and breathed his last. Then the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. —Mark 15:37–38

At the moment Jesus died, approximately one half mile away the enormous temple curtain was miraculously torn. It must have been a wondrous sight to behold, to see and hear the tearing and the fall. Yet more wondrous was what it meant.

For as long as the curtain hung, the holiest part of the temple was inaccessible to nearly everyone. But when God brought it down, the way to His mercy was cleared. No more were the priestly sacrifices required to gain entrance or their mediation once inside. Jesus was “the Way.”

It wasn’t just God’s mercy that came into full view when the curtain came down; it was His holiness as well. The curtain had been a protection God had put in place, knowing that His glory and holiness were literally too much for us to survive. So, God brought down the curtain, but only after it was safe to do so—when Christ gave Himself as the full and final sacrifice.
