As a deer longs for flowing streams, so I long for you, God. I thirst for God, the living God. When can I come and appear before God? —Psalm 42:1–2
It was more than a casual conversation that the psalmists longed for, far deeper than a hello in the hallway. They (this psalm is likely to have been cowritten by the temple musicians) had set their hearts to abide in the presence of God.
Day after day they served on the temple grounds, calling God’s people to worship through musical expressions of His glory. Yet they were not dulled by what they were doing. In their case, familiarity did not breed contempt (to invert the popular adage) because the presence of God was so glorious it was always a fresh encounter.
Those who gave hour upon hour and day upon day to worship longed for more of it. They thirsted for the presence of God.
To know God was to want more of Him. To taste of His goodness was to desire to feast upon it.
