In you, O LORD, do I take refuge; let me never be put to shame; in your righteousness deliver me! . . .Into your hand I commit my spirit; you have redeemed me, O LORD, faithful God. —Psalm 31:1, 5 ESV
Death is a reality we must face. Yet the fear of death can be overcome by the anticipation of spending eternity in God’s presence.
Ultimately it is death itself that will “pass away”; we who are in Christ will live on and on and on. Death is the last whimper of our enemy, the final but unfatal sting of the curse. After death there is life. The uninterrupted glory of heaven—the place that Jesus Himself has prepared for us.
So, while there is no certainty that our dying will be painless, there is promise that just as quickly as it has done its worst, death’s grip will be released. And we’ll be Home, in the place that Christ has prepared for us.
Yes, death is a reality. But only a passing one. Just beyond there is life. Forevermore.
