The Voice of God

January 25, 2025 Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth

Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness, and he was called God’s friend. —James 2:23

I have often tried to imagine what Abraham must have felt the first time he heard God’s voice. Abraham wasn’t looking for God—he didn’t even know there was a God. He had been reared in a pagan, idolatrous culture where there were no believers, no Bibles, no churches.

Then one day God pierced the silence. He introduced Himself to Abraham and made some incredible promises.

Abraham heard the voice of God. And Abraham believed God. Abraham’s life is the story of a man who listened to God’s voice as He revealed His secrets and responded in worship, faith, love, and obedience. Altars erected at Shechem, Bethel, Hebron, and Mount Moriah trace the steps of this “friend of God”—a man who walked with God in intimate communion and fellowship.

It’s not that Abraham never wavered in his faith. More than once, he acted as if he didn’t even know God. But God’s love wasn’t based on Abraham’s performance. Even when Abraham acted like a pagan, God relentlessly pursued him.

Make it Personal

Today, make it a priority to listen to God’s voice. Ask Him to show you ways you can develop a friendship with Him.
