The Tactics of Temptation

February 16, 2025 Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth

A voice came from heaven: “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well-pleased.” Immediately the Spirit drove him into the wilderness. —Mark 1:11–12

The booming proclamation of His Father’s pleasure in Jesus was quickly followed by an extended stay in the wilderness where He endured Satan’s unrelentless temptation (Mark 1:13). A glorious moment followed by repeated visits from the enemy. (Interesting that Satan didn’t throw his temptations at Jesus all at once.)

Have you noticed how often some of your most intense seasons of temptation have followed “immediately” on the heels of an unusually thrilling moment? Rather than just an uncanny coincidence, that may well be a diabolical plan.

You see, it is not just those who are dwelling in sin who are vulnerable to temptation but also those who are living in the light and who are actively serving the Savior. The enemy enjoys taking down the weak, but he also loves to pounce on the strong. He prowls and stalks. But do not fear; our Shepherd never sleeps.
