In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace. —Ephesians 1:7
From the coats of animal skin covering Adam and Eve’s nakedness, to the sacrificial ram provided for Abraham, to the blood of the Passover lamb that spared the Israelites in Egypt, to the atoning blood sprinkled and poured out on the priestly altar in the Old Testament, to Christ sharing the Passover cup in the upper room, to the ultimate sacrifice of Christ’s death on the cross, a “scarlet thread” runs through Scripture, satisfying God’s righteous wrath against sin and covering sinners’ shame and guilt with the blood of an innocent substitute.
If you’re looking for motivation to forgive anyone who’s hurt you, find your place on the scarlet thread of Scripture. See your sins there in all their shame and selfishness. Try to fathom the distance His grace has bridged between you and God’s wrath. And with the rush of relief flooding your soul, realize what you owe to those who deserve forgiveness as little as you do. Follow the thread all the way home to the Father.
