The Process of Sanctification

May 25, 2025 Débora Cázarez de Rivera

May your whole spirit, soul, and body be kept sound and blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. He who calls you is faithful; he will do it. —1 Thessalonians 5:23–24

When we go through times of trial, the process of sanctification isn’t so pleasant. Gratitude doesn’t tend to just “flow” from us, and our struggles aren’t something that usually bring us “great joy” as James teaches (James 1:2). Brokenness caused by the Lord often hurts and brings doubt, fear, and uncertainty with it. But brokenness also brings emptying of our self; through it, we can realize how selfish, self-sufficient, and arrogant we are.

But look at what Paul says in 1 Thessalonians 5: the process of sanctification causes our whole spirit, soul, and body to be preserved blameless for the coming of Him in whom we have put our hope. Isn’t this wonderful? God preserves us. He is totally and completely in favor of our being well both physically and spiritually. He has called us His own and will preserve us to the end.
