I saw the Lord seated on a high and lofty throne, and the hem of his robe filled the temple. —Isaiah 6:1
Humility has never been popular in the eyes of the world. If you want to get ahead, self-confidence and self-promotion are the fail-proof prescriptions for success. However, in the kingdom of God, humility and brokenness are essential.
Humbling ourselves is the first step we take toward God. But how do we do this? Isaiah provides some instruction from his personal experience. In Isaiah 6, we have a great model of how to approach God with humble hearts.
First, Isaiah saw the Lord in His awesome holiness and majesty. Then Isaiah recognized the depth of his own sin and was overwhelmed. He humbly confessed His sin, and God forgave and cleansed him.
Like Isaiah, when we are brought to a new awareness of God’s holiness, we recognize the depth of our own sinfulness. With a broken, contrite heart, we confess and forsake our sin. God responds to our humility with forgiveness; He restores us and makes us usable instruments to fulfill His purposes in our world.
