The Most Important Appointment

February 1, 2025 Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth

“You are worried and upset about many things, but one thing is necessary.” —Luke 10:41–42

“My most important appointment today is with Jesus in prayer.”

Every morning as I meet with the Lord, I see those words on a plaque given to me by a friend. I need that crucial reminder, as my mind so easily drifts off to other “important appointments” and tasks. Looking at that plaque, however, forces me to face God’s perspective of what really matters.

Throughout my entire spiritual pilgrimage, prayer has been a struggle for me. I’ve always loved to read, study, memorize, and meditate on the Word. But prayer has never come easily.

Loving biographies as I do, I’m well aware that great men and women of God have been men and women of prayer. I’ve been inspired by the accounts of their prayer life but have also felt like an infant when I considered my prayer life next to theirs.

Despite the struggle, I know in my heart that rich communion with God in prayer can be a daily reality and practice in my life—just as it can be in yours.
