The earth was formless and empty, darkness covered the surface of the watery depths, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters. —Genesis 1:2
What a picture this verse paints of our lives prior to God’s intervention. Formless, empty, and dark—incapable of transforming ourselves into something whole or useful. And yet the Spirit was “hovering”—alive and active. Through His initiative, chaos gave way to order, emptiness to fullness, darkness to light.
But that life-giving, redeeming work of God wasn’t just for our salvation. Throughout our lives, we remain dependent on Him for everything related to life and godliness. None of us can live without this ministry of the Spirit. Without Him, we’d have no reason for hope. Yet by His transforming grace and power, He can speak life and light into the most dire situation.
Your world may seem dark, confusing, and murky. But God’s Spirit is present; He’s actively at work, breathing life into places void of life, making barren places thrive, doing the impossible, filling, transforming, revealing Christ. Oh, what cause for hope and joy the Spirit of God gives us!
