After singing a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives. —Matthew 26:30
When you know you are facing a hard day, what can you do to set your mind at peace? When tomorrow’s schedule involves a dreaded doctor’s appointment, a meeting that will determine your work future, or the funeral of a loved one, how do you overcome the anxiety that tries to overcome you?
Imagine what it must have been like for Jesus on the evening before His arrest, when He ate the Passover meal with the disciples. Think of all that transpired that evening—Jesus washing their feet, passing the bread and the cup, looking into the eyes of Judas the betrayer and Peter the denier, and singing. Yes, singing.
It was tradition to sing at the close of the Passover meal, but Jesus wasn’t following a pre-planned program when He sang the Father’s praise the evening before surrendering to His plan. Singing was perhaps the best way in that moment for Jesus to calm His soul, to acknowledge that the Father is good even when His plan is hard.
