Moab has been left quiet since his youth, settled like wine on its dregs. . . . So his taste has remained the same, and his aroma hasn’t changed. —Jeremiah 48:11
Suffering takes on a different perspective when we realize it’s an essential tool in God’s hand to conform us to the image of Jesus. The process of sanctification takes place as we embrace our suffering rather than running from it or resenting it.
In the book of Jeremiah, we find a vivid picture of what happens if we don’t allow suffering to do its purifying work in our lives. When wine was made in Jeremiah’s day, grape juice was poured into a wineskin and left to sit for weeks, until the bitter dregs or sediment settled to the bottom. Then it was poured into another wineskin so more dregs could be separated. This process was repeated again and again, until the wine was pure and sweet.
Suffering is God’s means of pouring us from one jar to another so the dregs of self and sin can be separated out, until the pure, sweet wine of His Spirit is all that remains.
