The Blessing of Drawing Near

June 10, 2026 Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth

The LORD would speak with Moses face to face, just as a man speaks with his friend. —Exodus 33:11

The Old Testament Jews were redeemed by God out of Egypt. God spoke to them, but they always had to keep a safe distance. On one occasion, God invited Moses, Aaron, Nadab, and Abihu, along with seventy elders of Israel, to come up the mountain to “worship at a distance” (Ex. 24:1). Those few men saw God “and they ate and drank” (v. 11). However, Moses enjoyed an intimacy with God not experienced by anyone else.

In the New Testament, Jesus selected twelve men to walk with Him. All saw the same miracles, heard the same messages, shared the same experiences. But three—Peter, James, and John—formed an “inner circle”; their friendship with Jesus went deeper than the others. Of those three, John enjoyed an intimacy with Jesus that surpassed the rest.

Those willing to come apart from the clamor and demands of each day to sit at Jesus’ feet and listen to His heart are the ones who will be blessed with intimacy beyond what most believers will ever know.
