Taste Test

Hate evil and love good. —Amos 5:15

Satan uses some of the same tactics with today’s parents that he used with Eve. Remember how he convinced her that by eating the forbidden fruit she would learn something she needed to know (Gen. 3:5)? He was right. When Eve ate, her eyes were opened. She did learn something she hadn’t known before: evil.

But God never intended we should know evil by experiencing it for ourselves. Satan, however, still says, “You need to taste this.” And he says to parents, “Your children need to taste for themselves too. If you shelter them, they’ll never be able to fit in and survive.”

Yet the longing of every Christian parent should be to bring up children who love God with all their heart, soul, mind, and strength—who stand out as bright lights, penetrating the darkness around them.

Believing moms and dads should be seeking to raise up not just “good kids” but children who enthusiastically embrace the truth, who love righteousness and hate evil, and who will be used by God to change the world, not just survive within it.
