Daniel determined that he would not defile himself with the king’s food or with the wine he drank. —Daniel 1:8
Heaven’s rule means God’s truth is both constant and eternal. In contrast, public opinions and policies change with the times and may pressure us to shift our standards as well. But Heaven’s rule people stay tethered to God’s Word as their guide for all of life.
Daniel, you recall, even as a teenager, resolved he would not defile himself with the requirements of the king’s program in whatever way it deviated from what his conscience allowed. He and his friends were willing to swim upstream rather than go with the mainstream to gain the flattering acceptance of those around them. Devotion to the Most High was their main motivation.
May that be so for us today. As those who believe in Heaven’s rule, we will resolve to live as holy people of a holy God rather than assimilating into the culture around us.
