Jesus wept. —John 11:35
As a boy, Jesus was misunderstood by His parents. During His earthly ministry, His brothers didn’t believe in Him. He experienced hunger, exhaustion, and temptation. As the Man of Sorrows, He witnessed the ravages of sin in a broken world—sickness, death, grief, pride, prejudice, hatred. He wept at the grave of His friend Lazarus.
He wept over Jerusalem for her rejection of her Savior. He wept in the garden as He prepared to go to the cross and endure the ultimate suffering. This Man of Sorrows was betrayed, mocked, beaten, and crucified.
Much of the sorrow in the world is readily visible, but there’s also much private pain that most never see. Yet Jesus has always seen, and He cared enough to do something about it. He drank the full cup of sorrow and pain that every person in the world through all of history has deserved. He is our Wounded Healer.
At the cross, judgment and salvation met so we could receive forgiveness, comfort, and healing. One day, every sorrow of those who have placed their faith in Him will be turned to joy.
