When there are many words, sin is unavoidable, but the one who controls his lips is prudent. —Proverbs 10:19
When we hear someone described as a “person of few words,” we take it as a compliment to their character. One who speaks seldomly and selectively is generally considered to be wise. The Scriptures themselves acknowledge this in Proverbs 17:28: “Even a fool is considered wise when he keeps silent— discerning, when he seals his lips.”
So much is said through silence. Consider Jesus. In the horrific moments of being mocked and beaten, He remained silent, “like a lamb led to the slaughter” (Isa. 53:7). Through His silence, Jesus confessed trust in the Father and confidence in knowing that He was accomplishing the Father’s will.
There are many times in our lives when we communicate a better message through silence than we ever could through many words. As an added benefit, our wordless moments can become prayer-filled moments that can increase our intimacy with the Father as well.

Make it Personal
Be slow to speak today. Consider your words carefully, including whether you should speak them at all.
