Keep me as the apple of your eye; hide me in the shadow of your wings. —Psalm 17:8 ESV
The most threatening, persistent enemies we deal with are often those that hide out in our own hearts. False perceptions, temptations, destructive ways of thinking—these internal enemies can launch their attack against our hearts and minds, seeking to derail our faith, draw us into sin, or drown us in despair. Sinful tendencies, seething anger, and self-loathing thoughts are hard to know how to guard against.
Yet certainly these enemies are among those from which God promises to “hide” us in the shadow of His wings. When we look up to Him, trusting ourselves to His watchful, powerful care, we find Him able to help us resist even our most entrenched internal adversaries.
Within that still, safe place, we can stop our striving and find protection as He covers us with the soft feathers of His grace and love. In that place, we can rest while God works—while He Himself becomes our defender and champion against the lies and habit patterns that have worn us weary with their ceaseless badgering.

Make it Personal
Which of your unseen enemies feels most ferocious? Don’t try to fight them yourself—let the Lord fight for you.
