He restores my soul. —Psalm 23:3 ESV

Serving others can leave us fatigued and overwhelmed. While we may think a vacation is the cure, we’ve probably all taken time off only to come back more exhausted than when we left.

I’m convinced one of the biggest reasons we struggle to handle the rigors of day-to-day responsibilities is that our spirits are weary, our souls need restoration. And the remedy is found in spending time in God’s presence.

The restoration of our souls is a ministry of the Good Shepherd. The Hebrew word translated “restore” in Psalm 23 is a word most often translated “return” in the Old Testament. It speaks of God’s people returning to Him and of God returning to His people. The implication is that He restores our souls back to their original resting place—in Him—by means of His Word and His Spirit.

So, if you’re “running on fumes” today, ask God to restore your soul. Let Him fill you with Himself; receive fresh stores of grace; then let Him send you back out to serve with joy—out of the overflow of His life within you.
