Plagued by the Past

March 19, 2026 Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth

You were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God. —1 Corinthians 6:11

Do you ever find yourself plagued by your past? I once received a letter from a woman who had been controlled by shame for twenty- seven years. In it, she asked, “What can I possibly say about the selfishness of my abortion? How do you forgive yourself for murder?”

Then she went on to tell me what happened at a Revive Our Hearts conference:

I have released my life to God and am receiving His forgiveness. Instead of shame, I have godly sorrow. All those years ago, I put a tight seal on my heart. Now God is prying off that seal. I am free to love again and to let others love me. The stronghold is gone.

Through Christ, the worst of sinners can be made clean and new. The truth is that our past does not have to be a hindrance. In fact, by God’s grace, it can become a stepping stone to greater victory and fruitfulness.
