Passing the Baton

May 23, 2025 Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth

We will not hide them from their children, but will tell a future generation the praiseworthy acts of the Lord, his might, and the wondrous works he has performed. —Psalm 78:4

During a relay race, the exchange of the baton is critical. It takes place in a specially marked zone. It’s the part of the race that’s the most critical and the most difficult to execute.

The exchange is also where most teams lose time and position. Fumbling or dropping the baton during an exchange causes a team to slow down, and in some cases, be disqualified. A team with four decent runners can often outrace a faster, more talented team simply by being better at passing the baton.

For years, I have challenged women with the importance of passing on the “baton of truth.” A relay race is an apt metaphor for describing how the Lord wants us to transmit truth from one generation to the next. Older believers pass the baton on to younger believers, who pass the baton on to the next group of believers. Each generation is responsible for passing on truth to the following generation.
