He was pierced because of our rebellion, crushed because of our iniquities; punishment for our peace was on him. —Isaiah 53:5
The death of Christ was an extended, torturous, grueling death. No painkillers, just a cross, some spike-like nails, and a sword. The image of Calvary is so gruesome that we can hardly hold our thoughts there but for a few seconds.
We know that Christ had to die for our sins. But why did He have to suffer so badly?
The torture to His heart was as harsh as the torture to His body because our sin weighed so heavily on Him. It pressed Him down. It traumatized Him. This is why He suffered; He was taking upon Himself so much iniquity that the pain manifested itself physically. There was no escaping it.
Our sins killed Him and yes, our sins made Him suffer to death. Yet despite the torture, the crushing weight of our sin, the temptation to back out of what He had come to do, Jesus stayed in that place, determined to drink every drop of that cup of judgment and wrath. To save us.
