Rest in God alone, my soul, for my hope comes from him. —Psalm 62:5
Over the past several months, I’ve been meditating on something from long ago. The words have brought me great encouragement, peace, courage, and strength. They come from the Heidelberg Catechism, first published in 1563. It begins by asking: “What is your only comfort in life and in death?”
The response? “That I am not my own, but belong . . . to my faithful Savior, Jesus Christ. He has fully paid for all my sins. . . . He also watches over me in such a way that not a hair can fall from my head without the will of my Father in heaven. . . . Because I belong to him, Christ, by his Holy Spirit, assures me of eternal life.”1
Our only comfort in life and in death? There is a God. He rules from heaven. And because He does, we are free from guilt and shame over our past; our present circumstances are being perfectly ordained and orchestrated by Him; and our future is bright with hope.
