No Shortcuts

Older women are to . . . encourage the young women. —Titus 2:3–4

Becoming “a godly older woman” has been one of my goals for as long as I can remember. Even as a young teen I realized the choices I was making then would contribute to my life as a college student, a young adult, a middle-aged woman, and eventually a little old lady. I sensed then, and I know now, that there are no shortcuts to acquiring the traits of a godly, older woman. They must be cultivated over time and slowly seasoned to acquire their taste and savor.

Here’s the truth of it: the most amazing, godly older women you know likely were serious about being godly younger women as well.

So the message of Titus 2 is for all of us, older and younger. When we dig more deeply into its treasures, we see how older women in the church thrive by staying attached to the younger and how younger women can find a compelling vision for their long-term character and fruitfulness in the lives and faces of their older spiritual sisters.
