You reveal the path of life to me; in your presence is abundant joy. —Psalm 16:11
It’s natural to try and fulfill our longings by looking to people and circumstances. But the problem is that both will inevitably let us down. When things don’t turn out the way we expected, we get disappointed. And for many of us, that feeling becomes all too familiar.
For years, I looked to people and circumstances to make me happy. Time after time, when they failed to come through, I found myself disgruntled and disappointed. How freeing it was to discover that the deepest longings of my heart could never be fulfilled by any person or thing. Things burn and break; they get stolen or lost. People change, move away, or die. But the Bible reminds us that fullness of joy is found in God’s presence.
God may not fulfill all our longings in the way— or the timing—that we expect. But ultimately, every desire of our heart will be fulfilled in knowing Him.
