“I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever.” —John 14:16
The disciples were dejected. Jesus had told them He would be leaving soon and that because of their calling to be His disciples, many people would hate and reject them. They couldn’t imagine the future without their best Friend and spiritual leader. They needed comfort and reassurance. And that’s exactly what Jesus gave them when He introduced them to the Holy Spirit.
For more than thirty years, Christ had been the physical manifestation of God on earth. He was Immanuel—God with us. All along it was His plan that the Son would return to the Father’s right hand. However, He never planned to leave His children alone—He always intended to be present with them.
That same evening, Jesus said, “I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever” (John 14:16). “I will never leave you nor forsake you” wasn’t sentimentalism; it was God’s promise—a promise He keeps to this day through the presence of the Holy Spirit, our constant Helper.
