Man of Sorrows

August 24, 2025 Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth

He himself bore our sicknesses, and he carried our pains. —Isaiah 53:4

Heaviness and sorrow are inescapably part of the human condition. Ultimately, all pain and suffering are the result of sin, whether ours or someone else’s. Sin always leads to sorrow, as Scripture makes clear, and mankind isn’t alone in experiencing the consequences. All of creation groans in pain. Worst of all, God sorrows. He experiences grief over the sin of the human race.

God’s grief is multifaceted. He grieves because His holiness has been assaulted, and He grieves over the broken relationship with His creatures. He’s pained when those He loves resist His love and rebel against Him. God experiences deep heartache over the effects of sin on His whole creation.

So, with a grieving heart, God does two things. First, in response to sin He sends judgment— He punishes. And second, He grants mercy and grace—He saves. God’s grief over sin and the sorrow it causes led Him to send His Son, Jesus, to bear all this suffering. The One who had known unmitigated joy for eternity past came to earth to become the Man of Sorrows.
