“I am the Lord’s servant,” said Mary. “May it happen to me as you have said.” —Luke 1:38
For you to be the slave of Jesus Christ will likely mean a different set of assignments than those He has given me or someone else. We must resist the temptation to compare what He asks of us with what He may require of others.
He may ask you to forgo a fulfilling career to devote the prime years of your life to serving your family. He might ask you to serve Him in a secular work environment that’s antagonistic to Christian beliefs or that you serve faithfully for years in a needed but thankless and obscure position in your local church. He might even ask you to reduce your living expenses so you can give more generously to the Lord’s work.
Regardless of whether He calls you to serve Him in ways that seem menial or significant, hidden or visible, beneath your skills or light-years beyond your abilities, routine or exciting, common or unimaginable—whatever He asks, wherever He sends—the surrendered heart will say, “I am the Lord’s servant.”

Make it Personal
As you pray today, make the words of Mary of Nazareth in Luke 1:38 your own.
