Liberty for Captives

“Today as you listen, this Scripture has been fulfilled.” —Luke 4:21

It happened on a Sabbath in Nazareth. Jesus had stopped by His hometown and visited the synagogue. He stood to read from the Scriptures, and someone handed Him a scroll. There was a pause while Jesus found His place. Then He read from the prophet Isaiah:

The Spirit of the Lord God is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and freedom to the prisoners; to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor, and the day of our God’s vengeance; to comfort all who mourn. (61:1–2)

The words were familiar, but something seemed different. Then came the words in Luke 4:21 that transport an Old Testament prophet’s writing into the living rooms, bedrooms, and other places where we’ve all felt the chafing restraints of sin’s enslavement. Today, know this Scripture can be fulfilled for you too. Through the presence and power of Christ, you can be free from whatever holds you captive.
