King Over All

March 2, 2026 Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth

“In him we live and move and have our being.” —Acts 17:28

The concept of a sovereign King who exercises absolute control over His subjects is one that our egalitarian, Western minds find difficult to embrace. We want to have a say in the matter. We don’t want to bow before an all-powerful monarch. What we really want is to be the king.

Our fallen bent finds the thought of someone exercising control over us insufferable and demeaning. But whether we buy into it or not, the sovereign rule of God and the lordship of Christ is a nonnegotiable reality. He is God, and we are not. In recognizing and coming to accept this unalterable, eternal truth lies the key to great freedom and peace.

The God revealed to us in Scripture is the King over all kings—which includes the sometimes petulant would-be king we see when we look in the mirror. Oh, that we could grasp that it’s entirely fitting that the King of all should exercise unquestioned control over our lives. And oh, that we could realize the safety and security afforded us in yielding to that control.
