It Needs to Match

December 15, 2025 Karen Ellis

Be doers of the word and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. —James 1:22

“Say oughta match do . . .” Or so the old people used to tell us. They weren’t talking about following Christ’s wisdom as a list of moralistic dos and don’ts, but rather as the qualities needed in times of trials against the church. . . .

Epistemology and ethics are like two sides of a zipper. Our ethics (how we obey God; the things we do) and our epistemology (what we say we know about God) should match if we are following after Christ. . . .

Too often, like those who received James’s letter, our say (what we say we believe about God) and our do (how we obey God) Do. Not. Match. . . .

The blindness of hypocrisy creeps in so gradually, and with such subtlety, that we must examine ourselves often. And in order for our say to match our do and avoid that trap, consider today: Does my say match my do?
