How Can I Pray?

February 3, 2025 Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth

The Spirit also helps us in our weakness, because we do not know what to pray for as we should. —Romans 8:26

As I have moved toward God in prayer, I have been helped by the following suggestions.

First, ask Jesus to teach you to pray. When the disciples saw Jesus’ prayer life, they were moved to plead with Him, “Lord, teach us to pray.” And He did. Along with those disciples, I have studied the prayer life of the Lord Jesus. I have been touched by the intimate communion He shared with His heavenly Father. And I have cried out to Him, “Lord, please teach me to pray.”

Another suggestion is to ask the Holy Spirit to help you pray. It is encouraging to me to know that someone as great as the apostle Paul would confess, “We do not know what to pray for” (Rom. 8:26). He recognized his need for help in knowing how to pray according to the will of God. But he also recognized that God had made a provision for his need, that the Holy Spirit had been given as a Helper.

Make it Personal

As you pray today, ask the Holy Spirit to help you in your weakness and to intercede in accordance with God’s will.
