Help for the Weary

August 9, 2025 Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth

Is anyone among you sick? He should call for the elders of the church, and they are to pray over him. —James 5:14

Many commentators believe the sickness referred to in this passage isn’t limited to physical illness but includes those who are weak or weary from various types of suffering. Unfortunately, we’ve developed a mindset that only “professionals” are qualified to help people who suffer with emotional or mental ailments.

So when you’re hurting, when your soul is sick, let the Body of Christ minister grace to you in the name of Jesus. After you’ve first prayed for yourself, share your needs with others—particularly your spiritual leaders who have been given responsibility to care for your soul. Ask them to pray for you. Confess any sin that may be causing emotional weakness or sickness in your life and be willing to stay accountable through the process of healing and restoration.

You may or may not “feel” immediately better, but you will know you’re being counseled by the sure Word of God, that you’re surrendered to His sovereignty and looking to Him for the care and direction you need.
