Therefore we will not be afraid, though the earth trembles and the mountains topple into the depths of the seas. —Psalm 46:2
In Daniel’s first vision, he witnessed heaven’s rule over the forces of nature: “Suddenly the four winds of heaven stirred up the great sea” (7:2). Those whirling winds symbolize great tumult and havoc coming on the earth.
Sounds familiar, doesn’t it? Can’t you feel that turmoil being stirred up around us today—in our homes, in our cities, in our world, churning like a cyclone? But make no mistake, this unsettling, this uprooting, this agitation, is a sign of heaven at work.
The God of heaven is controlling the events of earth from above, working in and through the conflicts raging in our broken world, working despite our own frailties and brokenness, working every part and piece into a pattern that will one day take us home to Him through the storm. Yes, the waves are high, but we are not awash in the floating debris of fate. There is power and there is safety in Heaven’s rule even when it hurts. Even when it’s scary.
