Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who substitute darkness for light and light for darkness, who substitute bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter. —Isaiah 5:20
“Lord, our world is upside down!” Those words were said by my late husband as we were praying before bed one night a few years ago. It’s true. Our world is indeed upside down. And our world will almost certainly be staying upside down until Jesus comes to turn it right side up again and to give us a whole “new earth” (Rev. 21:1).
Between now and then, evil will continue to run amok, troubles will overwhelm us, morals will rush downhill, age and sickness will deplete us. But heaven still rules, and we can live in that assurance. As a result, we can walk with calm and contentment through circumstances that send other people into a tizzy.
I’m not saying our emotions will never flare. They will. They do. But keeping a “Heaven rules” perspective reminds us of what is true and ultimate, settles our anxious hearts, and protects us from becoming panicked by the convulsions of this present world.
