He Will Come

September 11, 2025 Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth

“Why do you stand looking up into heaven? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come in the same way that you have seen him going into heaven.” —Acts 1:11

As we contemplate what happened in Acts 1, Jesus’ glorious bodily ascension to His Father in heaven comes with the promise that He’ll return one day, visibly and bodily, to reclaim us so we can follow Him where He’s gone—to a physical heaven and to a personal God.

The realism of what the apostles witnessed that day is gloriously unsettling. They actually watched Jesus ascend back to heaven. There were no special effects or mind manipulation involved. It happened. A true event, witnessed for their faith and recorded for our exhortation. Just as surely as Jesus ascended, He will return. A true event.

There is a risk of regarding the extraordinary occurrences of the Bible as mythical. But these moments are recorded in Scripture so that our faith will be anchored in the reality of God’s kingdom—which is both tangible and spiritual, both now and not yet.
