The law, then, was our guardian until Christ, so that we could be justified by faith. —Galatians 3:24
There is theological debate—carried out in mostly respectful ways—over the place of the old covenant in the lives of new covenant believers. For example, do people of the covenant of grace have any obligation to the moral aspects of the covenant of the law, especially the Ten Commandments?
We know that Christ fulfilled the law and that only through faith in Him can we be saved. We have no duty to offer sacrifices or observe the traditions the law once required. But there are reasons the Scriptures tell us what life under the law was like. It is good for us to see how the law foreshadowed the Messiah and showed us the seriousness of sin and the costliness of atonement.
We benefit from learning what the law required and how Christ met its demands once and for all. Surely some understanding of life under the law renders a greater devotion to the blood-bought grace of Christ.
