You are good, and you do what is good. —Psalm 119:68
It’s not something we’d ever say aloud, but I’ve sat across from enough tearful women to know that deep down we have a hunch God isn’t really good. Or at least we wonder, Will God be good to me?
It’s a lie we’ve been falling for since the garden of Eden.
The consequences have always been devastating. Without the conviction that God is good, our hearts are easily shipwrecked, tossed against the rocks by the storms of life. But feelings aren’t facts. Our fear that God isn’t good or that He won’t be good to us doesn’t change His nature.
Like the psalmist, we can choose to declare that God is good. That conviction is an anchor that holds in every storm. The psalmist’s trust in God’s goodness was tethered to his craving to know the Word. And no wonder! From Genesis to Revelation, the Bible is the story of God’s goodness and elaborate grace. The more we seek Him through His Word, the more our hunch starts to fade. God is good and does good. That anchor surely holds.
