This is my comfort in my affliction: Your promise has given me life. —Psalm 119:50
Abraham surrendered himself to God’s purposes with no tangible guarantee that his obedience would ever “pay off.” But even when he couldn’t see the outcome, he believed God. He staked his life, security, and future on the fact that God was real and would keep His promises.
It was faith in the character and promises of God that enabled Abraham and Sarah to embrace an itinerant lifestyle for more than twenty-five years, despite the disappointment of infertility and other unfulfilled longings.
It was faith that motivated him to surrender the best land option to Lot, trusting that God would provide a suitable inheritance for him. It’s also what gave him courage (at the age of seventy- five!) to take on the allied kings of the East to rescue his errant nephew.
At times, God’s call on our lives may require us to relinquish things or people we can’t imagine living without. But His promises provide a powerful antidote to all our fears. They free us to step out in faith and surrender.
