Confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, so that you may be healed. —James 5:16
Several years ago, the Holy Spirit convicted me that I had developed the habit of exaggerating the truth. Though no one else knew—and though others might have considered my offenses relatively inconsequential—I experienced an almost suffocating (and blessed!) sense of God’s conviction in my heart, and I knew this was something I had to bring into the light.
Changing my behavior turned out to be harder than I expected. Then God brought to mind James 5:16: “Confess your sins to one another.”
I’ll never forget approaching two godly individuals, acknowledging to them my sin, and asking them to pray for me. It was one of the most difficult things I’d ever done, and I would certainly have preferred to work things out alone with the Lord. But the pride that caused me to want to exaggerate was the same pride that wanted to cover up my sin. When I finally did confess to others, that pride was broken and I was set free to begin speaking the truth.

Make it Personal
Tell another godly person about a recurring temptation you face, and ask the Lord to use that confession to help set you free.
