Rejoice as you share in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may also rejoice with great joy when his glory is revealed. —1 Peter 4:13
Your pain—be it physical affliction, memories of abuse, a troubled marriage—may go on for a long time. It may even go on for the rest of your life. But even a lifetime isn’t forever.
When we’re in the presence of the Lord, everything that has taken place in this life will be just a breath.
Some time ago, a woman asked me for counsel in dealing with a painful situation in her marriage. It had been that way for a long time, and there was no indication of change. I was moved as she said, “If it goes on for our whole lives, that’s okay. I know time is short and eternity is long. One day this will all be just a blip on the screen.”
She spoke not as one who is just resigned to her “fate.” She longs for things to be different now. But she has a perspective that enables her to be faithful in the midst of the fire.
