Why, my soul, are you so dejected? Why are you in such turmoil? Put your hope in God, for I will still praise him, my Savior and my God. —Psalm 42:11
If you’ve been a Christian for any length of time, you’ve probably experienced a season of “spiritual dryness.” Those dry spells can be God’s way of revealing what’s in our heart. They teach us to walk by faith rather than sight.
At times the dryness can be related to getting into a rut in our devotions; perhaps we’ve become more focused on mechanics than on drawing spiritual life from Scripture and nourishing our hearts on Christ. Dry spells are also good opportunities to ask God to reveal any issues that may be creating a barrier in our relationship with Him.
When you find yourself in a dry spell, follow the example in Psalms 42–43: look back and remember the joys you’ve experienced in God’s presence; look ahead to the day when your joy will be restored; and in the meantime, determine to look up with expectation, knowing that “I will still praise him, my Savior and my God.”
