Don’t Panic—Pray!

September 7, 2025 Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth

At the first light of dawn [King Darius] got up and hurried to the lions’ den. —Daniel 6:19

King Darius was a ball of nerves the minute he walked away from the lions’ den. He couldn’t eat, couldn’t sleep. Whatever he tried to do, he found no source of relief. He paced, wandered, and fidgeted all night long, checking the window every five minutes to see if dawn was breaking, when he could justify a kingly visit to the execution site and find out what had become of his unlikely Hebrew friend.

Yet tellingly, there’s no hint of panic from the man who was actually inside the lions’ den, where all the fangs and claws were located. Through it all, Daniel remained steady and calm.

Why? The Bible doesn’t spell it out, but I imagine Daniel spending the night communing with God in prayer. Perhaps he prayed the words of Psalm 22, which he likely knew well: “Save me from the lion’s mouth . . . You answered me! . . . I will praise you in the assembly. You who fear the Lord, praise him!” (vv. 21–23).

Make it Personal

Pray that God would help you to remain steady and calm and to trust Him no matter what’s happening around you.
