Devotion to God > Good Works

While they were traveling, he entered a village, and a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. —Luke 10:38

Martha had the gift of hospitality and a heart for service. She welcomed Jesus and his companions into her home, opening her doors and offering her care generously. The work must have been considerable, and Martha grew frustrated with her sister when she chose to sit at Jesus’ feet instead of helping with the preparations.

Often, our own gift of service can become a source of pride. We focus so intently on tasks that we neglect relationships around us, or we become resentful when others don’t serve in the same way we do. In doing so, we overlook what is truly most important: the relationship we are called to cultivate with Jesus.

With gentleness, love, and patience, Jesus refocused Martha’s heart: “Martha, you are worried and upset about many things. Only one thing is necessary: come to Me” (Luke 10:41–42 paraphrase).
