Detached

All of us wither like a leaf, and our iniquities carry us away like the wind. —Isaiah 64:6

Isaiah and Jesus used contrasting imagery to make the same appeal. Isaiah warned his listeners that they were on the verge of letting go; Jesus, in John 15, urged His listeners to stay connected: “I am the vine; you are the branches. The one who remains in me and I in him produces much fruit” (v. 5).

Those who abide, who cling to Christ without ever letting go, draw life from Him and bear fruit. Others are like dying leaves; their life-flow is being choked by their own iniquity. It’s only a matter of time before they let go and fly aimlessly away.

Seeing the vulnerable position of God’s sinning people, the prophet Isaiah preached and prayed. He who remained attached, who abided, interceded for those who were flailing in the gusts of iniquity. Though we may not preach as Isaiah did, we can surely pray as he did; we cannot be indifferent to those who are endangered by their own iniquity.
