Three times a day [Daniel] got down on his knees, prayed, and gave thanks to his God, just as he had done before. —Daniel 6:10
Daniel had a lot to lose by not complying with the king’s new ruling, which made his practice of praying to God a capital offense. But did Daniel really have anything to lose? Not if Heaven rules!
This is how we must condition ourselves to think. The truth is stronger than the risk. The Word is louder than the noise. The end is more certain than the present. And God is ruler over all. We face many challenges, distractions, and critical junctures in life where expediency and a drive for self-preservation seem to override what some Old Testament story would indicate is our best and only choice.
But let’s “dare to be a Daniel,” as the children’s song goes. Let’s turn from listening to what the earth says we’re supposed to think and believe, and let’s take Daniel’s faithful, determined walk home to his upstairs room, to those windows open to heaven, to those floorboards where he bowed his knees. And let us pray as Daniel did.
