“I am in them and you are in me, so that they may be made completely one, that the world may know you have sent me and have loved them as you have loved me.” —John 17:23
Companionship with the unseen God is a different experience than companionship with a seen person, but it is not a “less-than” experience. In fact, it is superior in many ways. God is never too tired to talk. He never misunderstands or miscommunicates. God does not hold the forgiven past against us. His feelings never change; He has no mood swings. God never forgets a promise.
Of course, we still need in-person companionship but knowing its limitations helps us seek the companionship of our perfect Father. Jesus is completely satisfied in the company of His Father, and He wants us to enjoy it as much as He does.
When circumstances put you in a “just me and God” situation, think not of what you’ve lost but of what you could gain. And when you are once again in the company of other people, you will bring a new richness of love with you.
