By most standards, I had an unusually sheltered upbringing. I don’t recall ever hearing a word of profanity before graduating from high school. Due to intentional choices by my parents, I knew almost nothing about popular movies or TV programs.
But when I left for college, I knew the difference between right and wrong. I had a solid overview of the Bible. I’d memorized large portions of Scripture and had a basic understanding of the major Christian doctrines.
Even more important, I had a vital, growing relationship with Jesus—one that would sustain me and motivate me to want to make God-honoring choices. The “faith of our fathers” had become my own.
Only the grace of God can cause the light to go on in the hearts of kids raised in even the most godly families. However, I’m convinced that you can’t underestimate the value of children growing up in an environment where parents love God fervently and where they prize what is pure, good, and eternal.
